Exhibited at the PRAGUE QUADRENNIAL 2019
A group exhibition celebrating the work of international emerging artists through the practice, craft and artistry of design for text-based theatre, presented at the Industrial Palace in Prague, Czech Republic. Common Design Studio brought together 14 artists from around the world, presenting new works responding to Alfred Jarry’s Ubu Roi.
A speculative scenographic response to Ubu Roi, exploring architectural frames, borders and the boundaries between performer and audience. Drawing on questions of borders from artist’s countries of origin - Croatia, Ireland and South Korea, the work examines theatrical boundaries including the fourth wall and the division between onstage and offstage. A rotating toilet-level scenography shifts the audience between locations, reflecting the play’s episodic structure while creating an immersive and unstable sense of place.
The exhibition concluded with a public presentation and conversation around the work and its conceptual development.
